As Netflix expanded into films, series, games, and live events, a critical challenge emerged: the same business concepts like "movies" or "actors" were redefined across systems. Data lived in isolated silos, forcing teams to manually reconcile mismatches and rebuild the same connections repeatedly.
The Solution: Unified Data Architecture
An UDA is a knowledge graph linking domain models to data systems via semantic mappings. It includes:
Upper metamodel for standardized domain definitions
Automated projections into GraphQL, Avro, etc.
Self-service tools (PDM for taxonomies, Sphere for reporting)
After Netflix implemented an UDA, they got unified definitions. Data became consistent and connected data across a growing ecosystem. Manual schema work was reduced, and data discovery turned seamless. Future plans include Protobuf support and expanded querying.
